Exist is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) academy in Utrecht, specializing in BJJ and grappling (no-gi). We also have a strong and technical kickboxing department and offer wrestling classes. Although we do not offer MMA classes, many people train the core components of MMA - such as groundwork, clinching and stand-up striking - separately with us.

What is MMA and what disciplines do you train at Exist?
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is a combination of several disciplines: stand-up striking, takedowns and ground fighting. Although we do not teach mixed MMA classes, you can train in the various disciplines of MMA at Exist:
Kickboxing - For your standing fighting technique, kicks, punches and clinching
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and grappling (BJJ no-gi) - For ground fighting, takedowns and submissions
Wrestling - For takedowns, takedown defense and ground control
heavy bag training - for strength, conditioning and technique
By training these disciplines separately, you build yourself a strong foundation in the components that make up MMA.

What does training at Exist look like?
Our kickboxing, BJJ and BJJ no-gi workouts are made up of three set elements that ensure a complete and effective class:
Warm-up - preparation of the body
Technique - focusing on punches, kicks, takedowns, positions or submissions
Sparring (optional) - customized and guided depending on level
Safety, respect and growth are paramount in every workout. This is how we ensure that everyone can train at their own pace - having fun and making progress.

Frequently asked questions about MMA in Utrecht

No. We do not offer combined MMA classes. However, you can train in the disciplines of BJJ, grappling (BJJ no-gi) and kickboxing that are part of MMA.

With us, you will learn the techniques that MMA fighters use, but always within the framework of one discipline per class.

Absolutely. All of our classes are open to people without experience. If you have no experience at all, we recommend the special BJJ and kickboxing beginners trainings.

For kickboxing: gloves, shin guards, bit.
For BJJ: a gi, for your trial class, sportswear is sufficient.
For grappling BJJ no-gi): a sports shirt or rashguard and sports pants without sharp elements and pockets.
We can advise you on this.

For your first trial class, you can borrow boxing gloves. For your BJJ trial class, you do not need a gi right away. Sportswear without sharp elements is sufficient.

We do not teach MMA classes, but women are welcome at Exist to train in the major components of MMA, such as BJJ, grappling and kickboxing. All of our classes are open to women and are taught in a safe, respectful and motivating atmosphere. You train at your pace, along with a diverse and supportive group of athletes.
