What is Braziliaans Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) for kids?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a defensive sport that focuses on technique, balance and strategy rather than strength. It is a great way for children to become physically and mentally stronger. Unlike many other martial arts, BJJ is not about punching or kicking, but rather controlling an opponent with clever moves and holding holds. This makes it a safe and effective sport for children.
We have two locations in Utrecht: our main location in Utrecht at 24 Ceylonlaan and our new location in De Meern at 4 Gessel. The location in De Meern will open on October 1, 2026.
At our main location, we offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in a gi (jiu-jitsu uniform) for children in the 6–9 and 10–15 age groups .
In De Meern, we offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes without a gi (no-gi); a T-shirt and sweatpants are all you need. In De Meern, we’re starting a class in October on Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. for children ages 6–12.
Why BJJ for kids in Utrecht?

How does the belt system work in BJJ for kids?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has a unique belt system that shows children's progress. Children start with a white belt and can earn different colored belts through effort and training. This motivates them to keep going and improve their skills.
What do children need for BJJ or BJJ no-gi training?
Equipment:
BJJ Gi: Also known as a jiu-jitsu uniform, judo uniform, or kimono, this is the training outfit for BJJ. PLEASE NOTE: You do not need a jiu-jitsu uniform for the trial class; a sports shirt and sports pants without any sharp elements are sufficient.
BJJ no-gi: “No-gi” means no jiu-jitsu gi. For this class, a sports shirt and sports pants without any sharp elements are sufficient.
Slippers: for outside the mat and for going to the bathroom.
Clothing advice for the first class:
Sportswear without zippers or buttons.
A bottle of water and a towel.
Slippers.
At our main location in Utrecht, we offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in a gi for children aged 6–9 and 10–15.
In De Meern, we offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes without a gi (no-gi)—a T-shirt and sweatpants are all you need. These classes are suitable for children ages 6–12.

Children can start practicing BJJ at age 6. The classes are tailored to their age and skill level. We have several youth groups for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: ages 6 through 9 and ages 10 through 15. At our new location in De Meern, we’re starting a group for children ages 6 through 12.

Yes! BJJ is one of the safest martial arts because no punches or kicks are used. The focus is on technique and control.

No, BJJ is suitable for both beginners and experienced athletes. Everyone trains at their own level.
